How Does a Colonic Work?

A colonic, or colon irrigation, is a treatment designed to cleanse and flush out the colon. It is offered at Mac Med Spa, Salon & Medical in Milford, MA to people with a wide range of health and wellness goals. Today, we aim to answer the most frequently asked questions about this treatment to help you get a better idea of whether it is a good fit for you. Read on to learn everything you need to know about this incredible treatment.

How Does a Colonic Work?

A colonic can result in better digestive and overall health by cleansing and flushing out the colon with a significant volume of water. Before your treatment begins, you will be asked to remove your clothes, put on a hospital gown, and sit on a comfortable reclining chair. Then, a disposable speculum will be inserted into your anus. This is connected to the colon hydrotherapy unit by a long disposable plastic hose.

Through the speculum, eight to 16 gallons of double-sterilized water is introduced into your colon, cleansing it and flushing out your feces. Since the feces is passed through the tube attached to the speculum, there is no need to worry about any unpleasant odors. Additionally, you can let us know if you’d like privacy during your treatment. We’ll give you a beeper and complete control over how quickly the water flows. Once you’re done, we’ll give you a probiotic drink.

How Long Will My Treatment Take?

You can feel pretty confident that your treatment will not take longer than an hour to complete. Often, treatment sessions can be completed in just 30 to 40 minutes. During your initial consultation, we will be able to give you a better idea of how long you can expect your session to take.

Is This Treatment Right for Me?

This treatment may be right for you under numerous circumstances. For example, if you want to mitigate the risk of constipation, this is an excellent treatment for you. This is also an outstanding treatment for people who already have a significant accumulation of waste and want to eliminate it quickly. Additionally, you may be considered a good candidate for this treatment if you are interested in improving your overall health.

What Other Benefits Can Be Gleaned From This Treatment?

There are a number of benefits that can be gleaned from this treatment besides the treatment or risk mitigation of constipation. For example, getting a colonic can treat GI distress, severe bloating, and colitis. It can also improve the symptoms of IBS or hemorrhoids. Additionally, there are a number of skin conditions that can be improved with this treatment, like:

Who Shouldn’t Get a Colonic Irrigation?

Colonic irrigation is generally discouraged for people who suffer from certain medical conditions. For example, this treatment may not be right for you if you suffer from severe anemia, congestive heart failure or other heart diseases, or blood vessel diseases. Additionally, you will most likely be deemed a poor fit for this treatment if you suffer from ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease, or Crohn’s disease. Furthermore, this treatment is not ideal for people who have:

Is There Anything I Need To Avoid Afterward?

Yes, there are a number of things you will need to avoid after your colonic irrigation. For instance, you should avoid the consumption of caffeine and alcohol for 72 hours following your treatment. Additionally, it is in your best interest to eat foods that are easily digested and limit your consumption of raw foods as much as possible. Good foods to incorporate into your post-treatment diet include mashed potatoes, white rice, chicken, and applesauce. Foods to limit include:

Is a Colonic Irrigation the Same As an Enema?

No, these are not the same. An enema uses water to cleanse the lower colon and only involves a single liquid infusion. A colonic irrigation consists of multiple water infusions, cleansing much more of the colon.

Can This Treatment Help Me Lose Weight?

This is not a weight loss treatment, and you should not expect it to improve your appearance unless you are suffering from bloating. You can expect to lose several pounds during this treatment, but any weight loss that appears on the scale is the result of lots of water and feces being flushed from your body. As you hydrate after your treatment, your lost weight will slowly return.

Do You Offer Any Treatments That Can Help Me Improve My Contours?

Yes, we offer several treatments that can help you improve your contours, including CoolSculpting PLUS, hCG supplementation, and liposuction. CoolSculpting PLUS is a highly advanced, non-invasive fat removal treatment. In its early days, CoolSculpting only involved the removal of roughly 25 to 30% of localized fat cells. With CoolSculpting PLUS, thanks to innovative Z Wave technology, between 60 and 100% of fat cells can be removed.

If your goal is significant, rapid weight loss, the hCG diet may be right for you. However, you must be committed to sticking to a very strict diet for 30 days. Sometimes referred to as human chorionic gonadotropin or the pregnancy hormone, hCG is a hormone that occurs naturally in both sexes. The reason it is sometimes known as the pregnancy hormone is that it is so prevalent in pregnant women that high levels of the hormone are used to detect pregnancy.

Am I a Good CoolSculpting PLUS Candidate?

As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to be considered a good CoolSculpting PLUS candidate if you have a normal or overweight BMI and can’t seem to sculpt your ideal contours through diet and exercise. However, you need to attend an evaluation with a medical expert to verify that this treatment will be safe for you.

We will also verify that this treatment will be effective for you during your initial consultation. Having a BMI that falls within the right range, unfortunately, is not enough to guarantee that this treatment will be a good fit for you. We need to evaluate your goals and current body fat distribution in order to make sure that this is the best option to help you achieve your goals.

Is Liposuction a Good Fit for Me?

There is a good chance that you will be considered a good candidate for liposuction if your weight is relatively healthy for your height and you have stubborn pockets of subcutaneous fat that refuse to respond appropriately to your best weight loss efforts. We can use liposuction to remove excess fat from people who have a BMI that falls between 18.5 and 29.9. However, you will not qualify for surgery if you are underweight or suffer from obesity.

What Results Can I Expect From Liposuction?

Individual liposuction results vary, but you can generally expect the removal of roughly a quarter of localized subcutaneous fat cells if you are targeting large areas for treatment, like your abdomen, back, or hips. If you are targeting smaller areas for fat removal, like your submental region or the backs of your knees, you should not be surprised if up to 80% of your localized fat cells are removed. You can also expect to see up to a 10- to 11-pound reduction on the scale.

What Results Can I Expect From the hCG Diet?

The hCG diet can result in 20 to 40 pounds of weight loss in just 30 days. Factors affecting how much weight you can expect to lose include how many calories you choose to consume for the duration of your diet and how physically active you are.

Typically, women who follow this month-long protocol consume a mere 500 calories per day. Men usually consume 800 calories per day. Don’t be intimidated by how low the daily calorie limit is. This protocol makes weight loss relatively easy by suppressing your appetite.
