How Does Laser Hair Removal Compare to Traditional Hair Removal Methods?

Everyone likes the feel of freshly shaved legs, but what about the day after? Prickly regrowth, ingrown hairs, and other irritations are the scourge of traditional hair removal methods, but there are now better, and even permanent, options. At MacMed Spa in Milford, MA, we offer laser hair removal as a cutting-edge alternative to other methods.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Compare to Traditional Hair Removal Methods?

There are a number of ways in which traditional hair removal methods differ from laser hair removal. The most obvious of these is that none of the traditional methods provide permanent results, though in the short term, they may be effective.

Shaving

For most of us, this is our introduction to hair removal. While it’s quick and effective for a day or two, it never lasts long enough and the stubbly regrowth can be annoying and uncomfortable. Additionally, even the most skilled of us will slip from time to time, resulting in cuts or razor burn.

Hair Removal Cream

Hair removal cream is quick and convenient, but as with shaving, the results are disappointingly short-lived. Additionally, using a hair removal cream can irritate sensitive skin, and is not suitable for removing hair from your intimate areas.

Waxing

You may think that waxing is a more modern way of removing hair, but certain cultures have been waxing off their body hair for thousands of years! For those who want a longer-lasting way of getting rid of their body hair, waxing is a great option, as it can be used to remove unwanted hair from all over the body and face. While you can do it at home yourself, for the best results and a better experience, it’s better to entrust yourself to our skilled staff here at Mac Med Spa.

Threading

For tidying your eyebrows threading is a great option, which is why it’s one of the services that we offer. However, it is best suited to removing hair from smaller areas and is not a good idea for larger areas. Though it can also be used for removing unwanted facial hair, it is not a permanent solution; the hair will eventually grow back.

Dermaplaning

Though dermaplaning is more properly grouped with facial treatments, it is technically a method of hair removal. This treatment uses a sharp blade to remove the fine “peach fuzz” from the face, along with dead skin, leaving your face looking bright and refreshed.

Laser Hair Removal

The traditional methods of removing hair have their advantages, but for those who are looking for a permanent solution to unwanted body hair, something different is required. This is why we offer laser hair removal so that clients can enjoy silky smooth skin long-term.

How Does It Work?

The treatment uses the light from the laser device to kill the hair follicles in the targeted area, meaning that after they have been treated they will no longer grow hair.

How Long Does It Take?

The Appointments

The length of each individual treatment will depend on the area or areas that you are having treated. If you are having the hair removed from a small area, the treatment part of your appointment may be over in as little as 15 minutes. However, for larger areas such as the legs, arms, or back, the treatment time will be correspondingly longer.

The Course of Treatment

It usually takes between 3 and 6 treatments to achieve hairlessness in any given area of the body. The reason for this is that laser hair removal only works on hairs that are currently in their active growing phase. Multiple treatments are necessary in order to catch hairs when they are in their growth phases, gradually eliminating them. This also means that you should endeavor to stick to the planned intervals of your treatment, or you may not get your desired results as quickly as you want them.

What To Do Before Treatment

Your skin needs to be in good health and not irritated, so you should avoid anything that would irritate your skin, such as sunburn, and products containing retinol, AHAs and BHAs, and chemical peels. As well as sunburn, you should also avoid tanning; the treatments are most effective when the difference in color between your skin and hair is most pronounced.

Other Non-traditional Hair Removal Methods

At Mac MedSpa laser hair removal isn’t the only advanced hair removal treatment that we offer. If you are not a suitable candidate for laser hair removal but don’t want to have to keep using non-permanent hair removal methods, then don’t despair. You may be a suitable candidate for electrolysis.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is another treatment that aims to destroy hair follicles to stop hair growing. However, whereas laser uses light to do this, in electrolysis a tiny needle is inserted into a hair follicle to zap it with a tiny jolt of electricity. Although it works best on areas with finer skin, such as on the face, it can be used anywhere on the body in areas such as the chest, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini line.

Electrolysis is often the best choice for clients who have less of a contrast between their hair and skin color. This makes it an excellent treatment option for our African American clients and those clients who have very fair hair and pale skin.
