Look Younger After Brown Spot Treatments

When we think of aging, the first thing that enters many of our minds is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are other signs that can give away our age just as quickly—brown spots. Whether caused by too much time in the sun, hormones or plain old age, this discoloration can make us unhappy with our appearance and take a toll on our self-confidence. Call Mac Med Spa in Milford, MA to discuss brown spot treatments.

What Are Brown Spots?

Aside from being a common sign of age, they can appear so slowly it seems like they just show up one day when we look in the mirror. They are flat and painless and can range in color from light brown to black.

They can vary in size and shape but are bigger than freckles. They can appear alone or in clusters and are usually found on people over 40. Luckily, these spots are medically harmless, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t an aesthetic nuisance.

What Causes Brown Spots?

Brown spots are caused by excess melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin its color. The darker the skin, the more melanin it has. When the skin is exposed to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, the body produces an excess of melanin trying to protect the skin from harm. All of us who have spent time in the sun without sunscreen are at greater risk of developing these brown spots than our friends who have consistently used sun protection.

A change in hormones can ramp up the level of melanin in your skin, which is why many pregnant women see dark spots lighten after they give birth. Age increases the amount of melanin in your skin, giving these spots the nickname age spots.

Where Do Brown Spots Show Up?

You can find these spots on the areas that have been most exposed to the sun over the years. Of course, they’ll pop up on our faces and make our complexion look uneven and dull, but that’s not the only place that will give away our age by showing these signs of sun damage. Age spots can appear on our:

The places that are most likely to betray our age are our faces and hands. Hands are often overlooked but are a dead giveaway, especially if you’ve spent a lot of care getting anti-aging treatments on your face. It’s always a good idea to ask your skincare specialist about brown spot treatments for your hands too.

Fortunately, there are great options available to help reduce or eliminate the appearance of these spots. Talk to your skincare provider about your areas of concern and let them look at your age spots. Our comprehensive medspa offers several treatments you can choose from.

Chemical Peels

We love chemical peels, and they are one of the best brown spot treatments offered because they are completely customizable. Depending on the extent of sun damage and other concerns you have, your skincare specialist can choose a light, medium or deep peel to address those issues. The best line of peels is from VI Aesthetics, with a range of peels to meet different needs.

VI Peel

This is a gentle but really effective peel designed to be safe on all skin types and colors; a real selling point as some peels can damage darker skin. This peel is a great brown spot treatment for those clients just starting to notice this discoloration. The power of this peel is in its ingredients:

These powerhouse ingredients go to work on the top layers of the skin to remove the damaged cells and the cells with too much pigmentation. It promotes cell turnover, meaning it will replace those dark spots with healthier cells during the skin’s rejuvenation process. This peel is an excellent choice not only for your face but also for the neck, chest, arms, back and legs. The VI Peel will also tackle other unwanted imperfections on your skin, like:

VI Peel Precision

Formulated to tackle elevated concerns around the aging process. This has the blend of the VI peel but at higher concentrations. This is meant for those of us that are further along in the aging process, and it can:

VI Peel Precision Plus

We don’t always address our concerns as soon as we see them. The Precision Plus peel is the most advanced version of the baseline peel. It’s designed for much deeper aging concerns and specifically discoloration and dark spots. This peel has the same synergistic blend as the basic peel but is 25% stronger.

This peel adds a few more powerhouses to its blend:

What to Expect

Once you’ve decided a VI Peel is right for you, you just need to make an appointment. There is no prep for you to do.

During Treatment

When you arrive, a numbing cream may be applied to your skin depending on the peel you’ve chosen, though most clients experience no discomfort. With a cotton-tipped swab, the peel will be gently applied all over your face or other treatment areas. Your skincare specialist will closely monitor your results and know the precise time to remove the peel.

Once the peel is removed, you can go back to your normal routine immediately. If there are any aftercare instructions, you’ll be given them then.

Results

You will immediately see a new glow and vibrancy to your skin. It may take up to a week for the old, dead and damaged skin cells to slough away. Once they do, you’ll notice a brighter and more even complexion.

Some clients love the results they get from one session, while others will opt for a series of them to achieve the results they want.

Microdermabrasion

Ask your specialist about microdermabrasion as you’re talking through brown spot treatments. This skin resurfacing treatment uses tiny crystal particles or a diamond tip to manually “sand” the top layer of dull and damaged skin from your complexion. Many of these systems include a gentle suction from the wand which stimulates blood flow to the area. When these top layers are removed a few things happen.

First, your skin’s deeper and brighter layers are revealed. Second, your body kick starts its production of collagen to help your skin get some of its strength back. Last, your skin is far more receptive to any topical treatments your skincare specialist has recommended as part of your ongoing brown spot treatments. Some of these topical add-ons that help diminish the look of dark spots are:

What to Expect From Treatment

When you arrive, your skincare provider will apply a numbing cream to your face to ensure you’re comfortable during your session. The microdermabrasion tool will then be gently passed over your skin, removing the dead and dull top layer. The suction will pull any of those cells up and away from your skin, allowing your pores to be cleansed and bringing blood to the surface.

This treatment takes between thirty minutes to an hour depending on the area being treated. When your session is over, you can immediately return to your normal activities. This is often called a “lunchtime” treatment because clients have it done on a break from work and go right back to the office.

Results

The results are two-fold. You’ll see immediate results in the brightening of your skin and how smooth and soft it feels. As collagen production is boosted from the removal of the top layer of your skin, the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles will improve and your dark spots will lighten.

For those clients wanting a little pick me up, one treatment may be enough. For those using this as one of their brown spot treatments, a series of appointments may be necessary to really impact the appearance of the spots.

Microneedling

They don’t call this collagen induction therapy for nothing. If you want to pay some serious attention to those dark spots and the rest of your skin, this could be the treatment for you. Your skincare specialist will use a special tool that’s loaded with hair-thin needles. They’ll pass this instrument over your skin, paying close attention to dark spots and other areas of concern.

This tool creates micro-injuries, and to heal these, your body sends its production of collagen into overdrive. As your body heals these micro-perforations, it regenerates new and healthy skin cells to take the place of those damaged cells. The effect is dramatic and can be transformative.

What to Expect

When you arrive, your specialist will apply a numbing cream to the surface of your skin. In about 45 minutes, your skin will be numb and you’ll be comfortable throughout your session. They will pass the tool over your skin and, once your session is done, it’s time to ask for a recommendation for skincare products that can boost your results.

The micro-channels left by the treatment act like a direct line into the deeper layers of your skin so the nutrients and benefits from topical products can be completely absorbed. Now is a great time to add in a nourishing and brightening serum.

Results

Many clients notice a quick result in the way their skin looks. They say it’s brighter and even firmer immediately. The real results come in a few weeks, and the collagen your body is producing regenerates your skin from the inside out. Those areas of discoloration are replaced with brighter, more evenly toned skin. Other results from microneedling include:

If you want to banish brown spots altogether, you can opt for a series of these treatments.
