Melasma and Pregnancy: What is the Correlation?

Melasma

There are many changes that happen to a woman’s body during pregnancy such as a growing stomach, aching back, swollen feet, and enlarged breasts, but many women also experience a cosmetic condition called melasma, or pregnancy mask. At Mac Med Spa, we can help reduce the appearance of this condition and help you restore your clear, healthy skin!

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition that is also referred to as chloasma. It causes dark patches of skin to appear on your forehead, your upper lip, and your cheeks. While this condition can affect anyone at any time, it is most common for women while they are expecting. It typically appears on the face. However, it can also affect skin that has been exposed to the sun on other parts of your body.

What’s the Correlation Between Melasma and Pregnancy?

Research has found that as many as 70% of pregnant women suffer from melasma. You are not alone, and our experienced medical team can help. It is believed that fluctuations in hormone levels are responsible for an increase in the levels of pigmentation in your skin.

What Can You Do About Melasma While Pregnant?

Although this condition may cause you to become self-conscious during your pregnancy, there are measures you can take before and after your baby is born to help your skin. You can use concealer to cover up the bothersome patches on your skin. Other cosmetics may be helpful in blending the discoloration to make it look less noticeable. Try using mild soap and always wear sunscreen to avoid aggravating your condition. After you have your baby, your skin should return to normal within a few months and you can feel like yourself again. From that point on, continue to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. Use chemical-free cleansers and moisturizers that will not irritate your skin. Be aware that you could have melasma again even when you are not pregnant.
