BOTOX® Cosmetic is the name of the most common facial injection medicine used to treat fine wrinkles and lines. When injected into the face, the muscles beneath are temporarily paralyzed, causing wrinkles to relax.
Reasons for Treatment
There are some common areas of the face that are known for being problem spots related to the aging process and environmental factors. Crow’s feet, those crinkly lines that form in the corners of your eyes, are one such area.
Another is the frown lines between the eyebrows. Long, horizontal lines that crease in your forehead are often called furrows. All of these can be minimized through treatment with BOTOX® injections.
Possible Risks
BOTOX® has been in extensive use for quite some time now and has proven to be quite safe. Slight side effects like injection site bruising or a headache may occur.
There is a chance for injections to be placed incorrectly, leading to droopy eye, crooked smile, excessive tearing or dry eye. This can happen because the medicine spreads to nearby tissues; therefore, it’s imperative to follow the practitioner’s instructions to prevent this from happening.
You should not seek Botox treatment while pregnant.
How to Prepare
Prior to receiving BOTOX®, you’ll consult with the practitioner. You’ll be asked if you’ve gotten any such treatments within the past four months and whether you take blood thinners, as these could cause complications.
Stop taking blood thinners a few days before your procedure in order to lessen the chances of excessive bleeding or bruising. Other medications of interest to your practitioner are muscle relaxants, allergy medications and sleep aids.
What to Expect
Prior to your procedure you may be offered a numbing agent for the pain though many do not require it. Miniscule amounts of BOTOX® will be injected under your skin into the muscles of the affected area using a very thin needle. You may need multiple injections for hard to treat problems.
Afterward, it’s safe to resume your everyday routine. You should begin to see results after just a few days. Results can last anywhere from three to 12 months. Follow-up treatments can maintain the effects.
Fine lines and wrinkles can be frustrating. They make you look older and can even cause you to look tired. Fortunately, you can relax wrinkles with BOTOX® Cosmetic.
