Restore Volume with Injectable Fillers

injectable fillers

Injectable wrinkle fillers are used to give skin a smoother and plumper look. As we age, our skin can start to sag and lose its volume and elasticity. Rather than undergoing an invasive surgery, injectable fillers can be used to restore volume to the skin. At MacMed Spa, Salon and Medical we use Juvederm®, Radiesse® and Restylane® to help restore a more youthful appearance to our patients’ skin.

Restylane® and Juvederm® are made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced by the body to give skin its volume. Hyaluronic acid injections fill the spaces between elastin and collagen within the skin and therefore restores the volume lost by aging. Hyaluronic acid also attracts and binds water, which helps keep the skin full at the injection site.

Hyaluronic acid is safe to use and does not cause infection, but its results are not permanent. Patients will need to get repeated injections to maintain the desired result. How long a wrinkle filler lasts varies. Juvederm®, for example, can last for up to 12 months. Our medical team will help determine the most effective treatment schedule for your needs.

Radiesse® is made from calcium hydroxyapatite, which is a mineral that strengthens bones and gives them their texture. In Radiesse®, the mineral crystals are finely ground and then suspended in a water solution. The FDA subjected Radiesse® to a clinical trial and found that it was more effective than collagen injections in reducing severe wrinkles. It also lasted longer. The FDA therefore approved calcium hydroxyapatite for use as a wrinkle filler in 2006.

Radiesse® is usually used to treat the mid-face, especially deep smile lines and other wrinkles around the mouth. Not only does it plump up the desired area, it stimulates collagen production in the body. As a result, its effects can last between 12 to 18 months.

Some lines and scars are resistant to wrinkle fillers. People who have skin disorders like rashes, hives or cysts should not get a wrinkle filler. Nor should people with a history of severe allergies, especially if they’ve had anaphylactic shock. Wrinkle fillers are also not recommended for people with bleeding disorders or extreme scarring.
