Sclerotherapy for Varicose Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins can be a condition that is anywhere from mildly disfiguring to physically painful. This condition stems from the way that blood vessels expand due to high blood pressure, genetics, and other causes.

The good news is that Sclerotherapy at MacMed Medical can treat varicose veins. Understanding how this common and safe procedure works will enable you to decide if Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for your varicose veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a series of injections aimed to reduce the presence of varicose veins. It is a treatment has been in use since the 1930s and has remained relatively unchanged since. This makes it both a time-tested treatment and a considerably safer way to reduce or eliminate the presence of varicose veins. The treatment can be considered safe due to the way it treats varicose veins by making sure the clots do not move. With the clots being unable to move minimizes the risk of any additional complications while there is no visible scarring.

Who Can Undergo Sclerotherapy?

Women that are pregnant, taking birth control pills or other hormone supplements and individuals at risk for blood clots will be recommended to utilize another treatment like laser surgery. Patients with a history of blood clots will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to see if Sclerotherapy is safe for them. Your doctor may choose to avoid using Sclerotherapy on certain veins, such as healthy veins considered usable for future surgeries. Other treatment options that refrain from destroying these veins should be used when varicose veins are present.

How Does a Sclerotherapy Procedure Work?

Our medical team will prepare the site where the injection will occur, along with the solution. Taking a fine needle, a salt solution is then injected directly into your vein. This triggers the vein to clot, eventually reducing the appearance of the vein. The procedure should only take 15 to 30 minutes to perform, but we may choose to schedule several injection sessions to minimize possible complications. You may feel cramping or discomfort at the injection sites for one to two minutes after the procedure.

After the procedure is done, it is important to refrain from any aerobic activity for a few days. This allows the blood clot to stabilize within the veins. Aerobic activity could result in the clot moving in a way that makes the varicose veins reappear.
