Symptoms of Broken Capillaries

broken capillaries

Capillaries are those tiny blood vessels that branch off from the larger ones in order to carry blood to all parts of the body. Occasionally, these capillaries can break. When they do, they can be accompanied by symptoms such as pain, swelling and bruising around the specific area where the broken capillaries are located.

A broken vessel in the brain can be extremely dangerous, since it can lead to a stroke. Broken blood vessels in the brain will usually cause things like a headache, blurred vision, dizziness, trouble speaking and weakness. Sometimes, a tingling sensation can be felt as well.

Blood vessels can also break in the eye. This typically causes the eye to appear bloodshot. There can also be one or more red places in the white part of the eye. The condition is sometimes accompanied by blurred vision.

Most broken capillaries happen near the surface of the skin. The cause is almost always some sort of excessive force. This force can be from internal or external origins. Overdoing things in the gym or other kinds of strenuous activity can put internal pressure on the capillaries. When this pressure becomes greater than the vessel’s capacity, it can rupture.

This concept can be illustrated by looking at a garden hose. There is a certain amount of water pressure that is pushing against the inside of the hose. If the pressure becomes too great, the hose will eventually start to leak due to breaks or cracks in one or more places.

External forces that can cause broken capillaries are things like striking or being struck by something. Hitting the arm on the edge of a door and striking the hand with a hammer are two examples.

Broken capillaries near the skin’s surface can, at times, cause some pain and discomfort. They can also result in swelling and bruising, which happens because blood is leaking from the vessel and into the surrounding tissue. These things will usually clear up after several days or a couple of weeks. However, spider veins may still be visible under the skin. This is a condition that is not likely to clear up on its own. Treatment is required to get rid of them.

Spider veins can be red, blue or purple and will branch out in different directions. Other than appearance, they seldom lead to any other health problems. However, because they often appear on the face, many people elect to have them treated. They are also common on the legs, but they can appear anywhere on the body.
