Tattoo Removal

People decide to get tattoos for specific reasons – to honor a loved one, to make a statement, or just to look good.

But there are also people who have tattoos on their bodies who wish they didn’t. Whether it’s the name of a boyfriend or girlfriend who is no longer in their lives, a tattoo that they simply don’t like anymore or a desire to once again have tattoo-free skin, many people want to remove tattoos from their bodies.

At MacMed Spa Salon & Medical in Framingham and Hopedale, our highly trained and professional staff can remove your unwanted tattoos with safe and effective procedures that won’t bust your budget.

About Tattoo Removal at MacMed

At MacMed, we use laser light and heat to break up ink particles in your skin. Broken ink particles are able to move through the lymphatic system until the body expels them.

Removing tattoos is no more painful than getting them. The laser pulses we use feel similar to being snapped with a rubber band. At MacMed, we use a topical anesthetic cream and chill-producing machine to minimize any discomfort.

Most clients require three to 10 treatments of 20 minutes, per month. Antiseptic cream and sunscreen is recommended for post-treatment.

Here is some information to keep in mind about tattoo removal:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ruled that inks used in tattoos are cosmetics, and the agency takes action to protect those who get tattoos.

If you have a tattoo you regret getting, don’t let it bother you – you are not alone.

According to a recent poll, 1 in 8 – or 14 percent – of the 21 percent of adult Americans who have tattoos report that they regret getting them.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) reports that its doctors performed nearly 100,000 tattoo removal procedures in 2011, up from the 86,000 performed the year before.

The FDA reports that artists create tattoos with electrically powered machines that move a needle up and down to inject ink into skin. The ink penetrates the skin’s outer layer and deposits drops into the second layer of skin.  Ink is meant to remain in place for a lifetime, and tattoos are meant to be a permanent part of your skin.

The FDA warns that there are many do-it-yourself tattoo removal products you can buy online that are not approved by the FDA – because there is no scientific evidence they work.

Laser tattoo removal features pulses of high-intensity laser energy that pass through the skin and then are absorbed by the tattoo pigment. The laser breaks down pigment into small particles. These particles are then excreted by the body or stored in lymph nodes or other tissues.

What to Expect

Tattoo removal treatments can cause temporary hypo-pigmentation, or lightening of the skin. If you are prone to keloids, which are irregular-shaped scars that grow above the skin, laser treatments may not be right for you.  It’s best to discuss your options with a physician.
