Sclerotherapy is a treatment for those who suffer from varicose veins and spider veins. In this procedure, a chemical called sclerosant is injected into the targeted vein in order to close it by scarring the inside lining. If you’re looking to rid your legs of unsightly and painful varicose veins, this treatment may be for you.
About the Sclerotherapy Procedure
First, the leg to be treated will need to be elevated in order to allow blood to drain. Then the sclerosant will be injected into the affected vein. Pressure will be applied above the treated vein to prevent blood from returning to it upon standing. Wearing compression stockings for about a week will maintain constant pressure on the area.
During the consultation prior to your procedure, we will review the number of sessions and injections per session your unique case will require. If you have a number of varicose veins, expect multiple sessions.
For larger veins that once required surgery, there is now a far less invasive treatment available. For this technique, the sclerosant is injected through the use of a catheter. No longer is extensive and painful ligation needed in the treatment of particularly problematic varicose veins.
After the Procedure
There is essentially no recovery period associated with sclerotherapy for varicose veins. You can immediately walk afterward though you shouldn’t plan on any vigorous physical activities or exercise. Just take it easy for a few days, and avoid sun exposure to the area for some time. As mentioned, you’ll likely want to wear compression stockings for a period of time to ensure regular pressure is maintained surrounding the treated veins.
Benefits of this type of varicose vein treatment are that it is quick and convenient, with no need to stay in the hospital. It’s also less expensive with far less pain and downtime than traditional surgical methods. Sclerotherapy has a success rate of approximately 80% in decreasing unsightly and painful veins.
Risks and Considerations
A common side effect is discoloration of the skin around the veins treated. This is temporary and can last for a few months.
