Day 0: The Day of Your Spray Tan
Your glow-up begins before you even step into the booth. Arrive at your appointment freshly exfoliated, shaved, and free of lotions, deodorants, or makeup. This creates a clean canvas for even application.
During the session, a technician will use a fine mist of bronzing solution, usually containing DHA (dihydroxyacetone). This plant-derived compound reacts with your skin’s outer layer to develop color.
You’ll walk out with an instant bronze hue, but this is just the cosmetic bronzer. Your real color develops over the next 8–12 hours.
Be sure to wear loose, dark clothing, and avoid sweating, water, or touching your skin. Don’t shower unless advised, especially if using a standard (not rapid) tanning formula.
Day 1: First Shower and True Color
After 8–12 hours, it’s time for your first rinse. Use warm water only (no soap) and you’ll see the initial bronzer wash away. Don’t worry! That’s part of the process. What remains is your developing tan from the DHA.
Your skin may look a bit lighter than it did the day before, but the color will continue to deepen subtly throughout the day. Pat your skin dry with a towel—don’t rub—and moisturize using an alcohol- and oil-free lotion to lock in hydration. Avoid shaving or exfoliating to help preserve the color.

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for—your fully developed glow makes its debut. The DHA has completely reacted with your skin, revealing a rich, natural-looking tan.
You’ll notice an even tone and smooth finish, perfect for showing off in lighter-colored clothing. Continue moisturizing daily and avoid hot showers, saunas, or chlorine, all of which can break down your tan.
Day 3–4: The Glow Continues
Your tan is at its best—radiant, smooth, and even. As long as you’re moisturizing and steering clear of harsh exfoliants, your glow should still look fresh.
Continue with daily moisturizing, and consider using a tan extender lotion to help maintain your vibrancy. Gently pat your skin dry after showers and continue to avoid intense sweating or skin friction whenever possible.
Day 5–6: Subtle Fading Begins
By now, your skin’s natural cell turnover starts to take effect. Spray tans only affect the outer layer of skin, so as those cells shed, gradual fading begins, most noticeably in high-friction areas like the hands, feet, and face.
To avoid patchiness, continue hydrating and apply a gradual tanning lotion to maintain the look for a little longer. A light exfoliation can help even out any areas where fading becomes uneven.
Day 7–10: Tan Breakdown and Touch-Up Time
As you approach the one-week mark, your tan will have visibly lightened. You may see some uneven patches or “crackling,” depending on your skin type and how well you maintain your tan.
