Treating Excessive Sweating with BOTOX

BOTOX®

Excessive sweating, known medically as hyperhidrosis, is a commonly experienced problem, especially in mature adult men and women. Sweat glands in the underarms, forehead, hands, or feet sometimes remain relaxed, with an unusually large amount of sweat secreted even when the body’s internal temperature is not significantly raised.

BOTOX® is an outpatient procedure that takes less than one hour, and the results are satisfactory and long-lasting. We encourage you to consider this non-invasive, medically safe procedure if you are concerned about excessive sweating.

How BOTOX® Works

BOTOX® can work to block nerve signals from the brain and also inhibit the work of certain enzymes and chemical messengers.

To treat excessive sweating, the patient is given a series of injections in the areas where sweat glands are producing an abnormal amount of moisture. The BOTOX® fluid inhibits the chemical messenger responsible for opening the sweat glands. The moisture is instead carried away by the body’s lymphatic system and discharged with other waste.

What Patients Should Expect

This type of treatment works not only on the underarms but also on the forehead, hands, and feet. The injections are made using a fine needle that penetrates just below the skin.

The BOTOX® accumulates in the supporting tissue where secretions of the chemical messenger activate the opening of sweat glands. The needle insertions may create a slight stinging sensation.

Long-Lasting Results

The BOTOX® takes a couple of days to fully activate, but most of our clients notice a reduction in sweating almost immediately. The effects of the BOTOX® injections can last for up to 12 months. We may recommend a follow-up visit to see if any muscle relaxing is causing uneven skin texture.

If this is the case, we may inject more of the compound in the trouble areas to even out the texture of the skin. Some numbness of the skin may be experienced but will soon become unnoticeable.

Advantages of BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis

The main advantage of this type of treatment is the ease by which the injections are made and the fact that our clients don’t need to interrupt their busy schedule. The procedure is also repeatable without any serious side effects.

Alternate procedures such as surgical correction or sweat gland removal can be dangerous and can cause scarring, blemishes, and lasting discomfort.
