Liposuction is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery. It is used to help individuals remove excess fat that they are having difficulty removing through diet and exercise. Research in the area of liposuction has created new techniques and new technologies that can be used during the procedure.
Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is the most popular type of liposuction available. It is performed during an outpatient procedure. Its goal is to remove fat deposits via small incisions that are made in the skin. The cuts are made just large enough to allow a cannula between three to four millimeters to enter the fat layer that sits between the skin and the muscle.
The first step in performing this procedure is to sit down with a doctor who will conduct a health history exam. After an evaluation of the patient’s health is done, a doctor will examine the patient’s goals and make sure that liposuction is right for them. Next, a surgery date is scheduled as well as a preoperative visit. Prior to the surgery, a patient is reminded about the medications and foods they should avoid.
During the surgery, the doctor will make a small cut in the target area. They will then insert a small port into the opening in the skin. This port is designed to protect the edges of the skin during the procedure and to make it easier for the skin to heal once the procedure has been completed. Next, the cannula will be inserted into the incision, and the fat will be removed. Once the area has been treated, the incision locations will be stitched closed, and a light compression garment will be placed over the incision to reduce swelling and to speed the healing process. A patient will be allowed to shower 24 hours after the procedure. The compression garments will be used for about two weeks after liposuction to help with the healing process.
SmartLipo
The technology for SmartLipo was developed in Europe. After the technology had been tested and perfected, the FDA approved its use in the United States in 2006. Currently, SmartLipo is one of the most popular methods of liposuction. It uses cutting edge lasers to provide patients with precise, high-definition body sculpting.
Medical-grade lasers are used to produce a beam of light that is so strong that it can rupture fat cells and melt them. The procedure is designed to attack fat cells specifically without affecting the blood vessels, soft tissues, and nerves of other organs in the body. The lasers are programmed to operate at a specific frequency that will produce the best effect for the patient they are being used on. The laser technologies that are used during this procedure prevent excessive bleeding, minimized swelling, and allow patients to walk away from the procedure with minimal bruising. Once the fat cells in the body have been liquefied, a cannula is used to suction the fat away from the body. Since the cannula is very small, the procedure can be performed with no scarring.
