What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a digestive disorder that is prevalent in today’s modern society. This condition is characterized by irregular bowel movements. The patient can have constipation, diarrhea or alternate between the two. Patients with IBS suffer with cramping, bloating, flatulence, nausea, heartburn, sudden urges to evacuate that can be fruitless or incomplete, and the patient may notice mucus in their stool. The patient generally feels uncomfortable, sluggish, and may feel mentally dull due to toxins that are not being released from their system.

Many physicians suspect that this condition is a result of a miscommunication between the nerves in the brain and the gut that produces ill-timed signals for the natural process of contractions that move food through the digestive system. Some physicians also believe that accumulation of waste matter in the digestive system causes or contributes to IBS.
Waste matter that is allowed to linger within the body can lead to a myriad of problems as it festers. Infections, ulcers, and even cancer can result from long-term endurance of this situation; so many doctors encourage patients with IBS to cleanse their systems with hydrotherapy colonics.
What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy treatments generally take less than an hour to perform, and consist of simply inserting a tube into the rectum and slowly irrigating the colon with warm water, or warm water infused with healing herbs. After the patient evacuates, the process is sometimes repeated if the therapist feels that the evacuation was not sufficient. The general idea is to clear the colon of as much waste matter as possible, which will encourage the colon and small intestines to heal and return to normal function.
Colon hydrotherapy may need to be conducted as a series of treatments if the patient is severely impacted or if an infection or parasites are discovered through the process of evacuation.
Additional Considerations
Patients are also encouraged to orally ingest probiotics, which will help the body to digest food efficiently, and to maintain a diet that is designed for easy digestion. It is important for patients with IBS to avoid processed foods, genetically engineered foods with chemical components; meats, which slow down the digestive process by nature, and orient their diet towards whole and organic foods. Patients with IBS should also be sure to drink plenty of pure water, which will naturally soften the stool and flush out the entire system.
Regular stretching such as the exercises included in yoga classes can help the patient to restore the natural rhythm of their internal clock while reducing stress, which many times contributes to digestive disorders.
Whether a person suffers from the syndrome of IBS because of a miscommunication of nerve signals from the brain to the gut or because of other reasons, common sense tells us that it is important to rid the body of accumulated waste matter, so it is logical to include periodic colon hydrotherapy treatments into one’s health regimen until the condition is resolved.
