Hot Stone Massage Benefits

December 21, 2015 by

hot stone massage

A hot stone massage is one in which the practitioner uses smooth-heated stones as extensions of their hands or places them on the client’s body. The heat in the stones can relax the client and warm up tight muscles enabling the practitioner to work more effectively.

What happens during a hot stone massage?

Before the client arrives, the practitioner will sterilize the stones and heat them. The stones are usually a black volcanic rock called basalt that absorbs and retains heat well.

A massage may be performed prior to the stones being used. The practitioner may use stones of different sizes during the massage likely with big stones on big muscles and small stones on smaller muscles. For how we customize a hot stone massage session, contact MacMed Spa.

A typical hot stone massage can last between 60 and 90 minutes. We will be able to accommodate your needs.

What are the benefits of hot stone massage?

Many people find the hot stones relaxing. Since the stones relax the muscles, the practitioner can work the muscles without using a lot of pressure. Hot stone massage may also be good for people who are prone to feeling chilly.

Hot stone massage can also be an effective treatment for a variety of conditions including back ache, arthritis, poor circulation, and osteoarthritis. It may also help people suffering from stress, anxiety, depression or insomnia.

Who should not get a hot stone massage?

Hot stone massages are not recommended for people with diabetes, heart disease, blood clots or high blood pressure. People taking blood thinners also should not get a hot stone massage.

Pregnant women should not have hot stones placed on their stomach, and they should visit a practitioner who has been trained in prenatal massage. People with sunburns should not get a hot stone massage.

Women undergoing menopause may want to reconsider getting a hot stone massage for it could trigger a hot flash. People with rheumatoid arthritis should also avoid hot stone massage since it might cause a flare-up.
