Electrolysis is a treatment used to permanently remove body hair. Although it dates back to 1875, technological advances have made the procedure both quicker and more comfortable. It can be used on almost any part of the body, ranging from the eyebrows to the upper lip. It also works on all skin types and skin tones.
How Does It Work?
Electrolysis safely destroys the hair follicle, which prevents it from growing hair. The treatment consists of inserting a thin needle into the targeted hair follicle. The needle transmits a small current that stimulates a reaction in the saline at the bottom of the follicle. The reaction stops the follicle from producing any more hair.
What About Transdermal Electrolysis?
Transdermal electrolysis is also called no-needle electrolysis and transdermolysis. The user applies a conductive gel to the target area and then touches an electrified cotton swab to the hair. Electricity supposedly travels down the hair shaft and destroys the follicle.
Despite claims to the contrary, the transdermal method has not been approved by the FDA. Hair is not a good conductor of electricity, so not enough electric current would travel down the shaft to affect the follicle. The use of a conductive gel actually makes the procedure even less effective, as it causes the current to dissipate across the skin.
No clinical studies have shown that transdermal electrolysis works, and the FDA has actually sent cease-and-desist letters to people or businesses claiming that the procedure has FDA approval. At MacMed Spa, we are proud to offer simple electrolysis, which is safe and effective.
Can Electrolysis Be Done at Home?
Not safely. Home electrolysis kits tend to be useless; some may even be a scam. This procedure needs to be performed by a trained professional to prevent any complications and ensure the best results.
Additional Things to Consider
Some people may require more than one treatment session to achieve the desired hair removal. The treatment tends to be the most effective on fine, light-colored hair. However, it all depends on the unique situation.
