Scheduled a Microdermabrasion Session? Here’s What to Do Next

December 17, 2018 by MacMed Spa

Microdermabrasion

Smooth and even skin is something we all desire. While a few of us are lucky to have it naturally, others struggle with skin conditions such as acne, age spots, scar tissues, dull skin, and brown spots. Fortunately, Mac Med Spa offers several treatment options, including microdermabrasion, to correct these conditions.
If you’re scheduled for a microdermabrasion session for the first time, you may be wondering whether you can do anything to increase the odds of having a successful treatment. Here are five ways to do just that.
Book Your Consultation
It is advisable to book a consultation before getting microdermabrasion treatment. Consultations are an incredible way for our professionals to assess your skin and determine the safest and most effective treatment for you.
Stop Using Exfoliation Treatments
Manual or chemical exfoliation treatments such as scrubs, serums, retinol, and others containing acids used to slough off the skin must be discontinued before treatment.
The heart of a microdermabrasion treatment is to manually exfoliate the outer layer of dead cells, and to stimulate blood flow in order to deliver nutrients to the epidermis.
Using other exfoliating agents can result in over-exfoliation, which can damage the skin and even cause hyperpigmentation or redness. Therefore, stop using them seven days before treatment.
Avoid Direct Sun Exposure
Although moderate exposure to the sun is recommended for healthy skin, it’s important to avoid it before microdermabrasion treatment. Direct exposure can destroy the cells and make your skin more sensitive. And if you have sunburn or redness, allow about 14 days to pass before booking an appointment.
Stop Using NSAIDs
NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin, Advil or Aleve. These drugs thin out platelets needed for blood clotting. If you have NSAIDS in your bloodstream during treatment, they can cause bruises. Therefore, if you have an active prescription, inform our physician.
Postpone Your Appointment if You Have Lesions
Microdermabrasion treatment cannot be carried out over an open wound. The treatment can worsen the wound and damage the skin because of its abrasive nature. Also, if you suffer from cold sores, it’s recommended to avoid scheduling sessions or appointments during an outbreak. Microdermabrasion treatment can either cause a recurrence or worsen an outbreak. Always inform our service provider of this condition.
Once treatment is complete, don’t forget to ask about the aftercare. Our physician may offer guidelines to follow to prolong the desired positive results.
